S3 E40 Exploring Irrigation Strategies for Tall Fescue
Thursday Jul 24, 2025
Thursday Jul 24, 2025
In this video, I dive into the 2002 study from Crop Science that evaluates how different irrigation schedules, tall fescue cultivars, and mowing heights interact to shape turf performance.
Article: https://acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.2135/cropsci2002.2011
â
What you'll discover:
Study design highlights: 2âyear field trial in Riverside, CA, comparing 2â4 irrigation events per week at ~80âŻ% ETâ, two cultivars (a dwarf vs. a turf-type), and two mowing heights (~3.8âŻcm vs. 6.4âŻcm)
Key findings: Twice-weekly âdeepâ watering yielded the highest visual quality. Dwarf cultivars and shorter mowing height boosted turf quality early, but overwatering and mowing short favored shallow roots and weed growth  Practical takeaways for lawn and turf managers:
Go for deep, twice-weekly irrigation at ~80âŻ% ETâ rather than frequent shallow watering.Use dwarf cultivars with lower mowing heightsâbut monitor for stress and shallow rooting.Always consider local soil type and climate before applying these findings.

S3 E36 Dr. Dan Sandor - Irrigation Requirements Following Seeding
Thursday Jul 03, 2025
Thursday Jul 03, 2025
On this episode of Turfgrass Epistemology, Dr. Dan Sandor joins me to break down his study that addresses one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of turf establishment: how much water should you really apply when seeding a new lawn?
Sandor et al. (2021) evaluated daily irrigation at 50%, 75%, 100%, and 125% reference evapotranspiration (ETo) to determine how quickly tall fescue and bermudagrass cultivars reach full coverage. The big takeaway? Applying more than 100% didnât help, and drought-resistant cultivars didnât show any special advantage during establishment.
In this video, we discuss:
đ§ Why 100% ETo is the sweet spot for seeded lawn irrigation.
đ± Why drought resistance in mature turf doesn't translate to faster establishment.
đ How less water can slow you down but not necessarily fail you.
đ§ What this means for homeowners and professionals trying to balance establishment with water conservation.
đ Paper discussed: Sandor et al. (2021), Irrigation requirements for establishing seeded tall fescue and bermudagrass cultivars in the transition zone

In this episode of Turfgrass Epistemology, we dive into a study from Oregon State University that looked at how turfgrass species and mowing height affect water requirements in western Oregon. The results might surprise youâtall fescue and perennial ryegrass significantly outperformed fine fescues when it came to conserving water.
Weâll break down the data on evapotranspiration replacement, irrigation intervals, and how mowing height can influence your watering schedule. Should you mow higher? Should you convert to tall fescue? This video gives you practical, science-backed guidance on how to choose and manage turfgrasses for water conservation.
đ Paper discussed: Blankenship et al. (2020), Water Requirements Influenced by Turfgrass Species and Mowing Height in Western Oregon
đ§ Learn how this research can help you irrigate less without sacrificing turf quality.đ± Understand why fine fescues arenât always the drought champions theyâre marketed to be.đ Discover how mowing height makes a measurable difference in water demand.

S3 E32 Tinfoil Turfgrass: Debunking Summer Lawn Care Myths
Thursday Jun 12, 2025
Thursday Jun 12, 2025
In this video, I critically examine the advice presented in "How to Fertilize in Hot Weather. Dog urine spot prevention, fungus recovery, general fertilizer." While the original video offers practical tips on lawn care during hot weather, it's essential to scrutinize the recommendations to ensure they align with best practices and scientific understanding.
Key Points Discussed:- Fertilizing in High Temperatures: Assessing the risks and benefits of applying fertilizer during peak heat and its impact on lawn health.- Dog Urine Spot Prevention: Evaluating the suggested methods for preventing and treating urine spots caused by pets.- Fungus Recovery Strategies: Analyzing the effectiveness of the proposed treatments for lawn fungi and their scientific backing.- General Fertilizer Recommendations: Discussing the appropriateness of the fertilizer types and application rates mentioned.
Join me as I dissect these topics, providing evidence-based insights and highlighting any misconceptions or areas lacking scientific support. Whether you're a homeowner aiming for a lush lawn or a lawn care professional, this critique aims to inform and guide effective lawn maintenance practices.

S3 E31 Drought Testing. Which Grass Uses the Least Water?
Tuesday Jun 10, 2025
Tuesday Jun 10, 2025
In this episode of Turfgrass Epistemology, we analyze a pivotal field study that tested the drought resistance and irrigation needs of five common turfgrass species under real-world conditions in northern Texas. Using a unique linear gradient irrigation system, Qian and Engelke evaluated how âTifwayâ bermudagrass, âMeyerâ zoysiagrass, âRebel IIâ tall fescue, âPrairieâ buffalograss, and âNortamâ St. Augustinegrass performed under a wide range of watering regimesâfrom excess irrigation to complete reliance on rainfall.
What did they find? Not all turfgrasses respond the same way to droughtâor to overwatering. Some thrived under low water input, while others demanded more than expected. Weâll explore which species held up under stress, which became disease-prone when overwatered, and what this means for water-conscious turf managers today.
If you're a turfgrass professional, a researcher, or just someone trying to maintain a healthy lawn with less water, this episode will give you real insight into how turf performance and water use intersect in the fieldânot just in the greenhouse.
Turfgrass science, evidence-based management, and no gimmicks. Letâs dig in.

Turfgrass Epistemology
Turfgrass epistemology explorers the question 'How do we know what we know about turfgrass science?'. My name is Travis Shaddox and I am a past assistant professor at the Universities of Florida and Kentucky and I have worked in the golf, lawn care, sport turf, and fertilizer sales industries. I am mostly retired now and use my time to conduct a few experiments related to soil testing in turfgrass systems.Â
The objective of this channel is to provide turfgrass managers and DIYers with evidence-based information to help make their turfgrass experience more fulfilling. Scientific publications can be challenging to understand and it is my goal to interpret these publications in a way that is easy to understand and immediately impactful.
